Terms of use
These terms are the agreement between you and us when you use BudgetUp as a learner. Please read them. We've kept them as short and plain as we can. Organisations that buy licences sign separate institution terms.
1. About us
BudgetUp is provided by Tamsar Global Ltd ("we", "us"), a company registered in England and Wales with company number 17371733, whose registered office is Unit 3, Office A, 1st Floor, 6-7 St Mary At Hill, London EC3R 8EE. Contact us at [email protected].
2. Education, not financial advice
BudgetUp provides general financial education. It is not financial, investment, tax, legal or debt advice, and it doesn't recommend any product or provider. Tamsar Global Ltd is not authorised or regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Games use fictional brands and simplified examples, and figures can change. Before making a financial decision, check your own situation and consider free, impartial help such as MoneyHelper. Read our full education-not-advice disclaimer.
3. Who can use BudgetUp
- You must be 16 or over.
- If you're 16 or 17, you can use BudgetUp through your college or another organisation, or on the free plan. Your account runs in under-18 mode: high-privacy settings, no marketing, no AI coach, no public leaderboards with your name, no chat and weekly rather than daily streaks. You can't buy Plus until you're 18.
- If you're under 18, please make sure a parent, carer or your college knows you're using BudgetUp. We may ask you to confirm your age band when you sign up.
- BudgetUp is designed for people in the UK. You can use it elsewhere, but the money rules it teaches are UK rules.
4. Your account
- You can play some games as a guest without an account. Guest progress is saved only on your device.
- When you create an account, give us an email address you control and keep your sign-in links private. You're responsible for activity on your account.
- If you join with an institution code, single sign-on or your VLE, your institution pays for your access and can see grouped (not individual) results, as explained in our privacy notice. Access through an institution lasts while its licence is active; if it ends, your account moves to the free plan and keeps your progress.
- You can delete your account at any time by emailing [email protected] (and, once available, from your account settings).
5. Free plan and Plus
If your university, college, council, landlord or employer gives you access (an access code, referral link, or signing in through them), everything is included and free for you while their licence is active. You'll never be asked to pay. We describe this as "full access, normally £600/year": that is the real price of Plus annual, which anyone can buy.
If you join with a code and don't give us an email address, your account lives on the device you joined on. You can add an email in Settings to sign in on other devices. If you lose that device before adding one, ask whoever gave you the code for help, or email us.
Without a code:
- As a guest (no account) you can play the first lesson of every topic, Who's the Scammer?, and all scams and debt-help content. Guest progress is saved only on your device.
- With a free account you also get one whole topic of your choice (the first topic you play becomes yours; it can't be swapped later) and 0 arcade game a day (it resets at midnight UK time; replaying the same game that day is free), with your progress saved. There are no ads.
- Always free for everyone: scams and debt-help lessons and the safety games (Help Hunt, Bill Juggle, Priority Snap, Who's the Scammer?).
We may change what's included in the free plan, but we'll give you reasonable notice of significant reductions.
Plus subscriptions
- Who can buy it: adults (18 or over). If you're 16 or 17, ask your school or college for a code, or ask a parent or guardian (see "Plus paid by a parent or guardian" below).
- What you get: every topic, level and game, with no daily limits.
- Price: £59.99 a month or £600 a year. No VAT is charged: Tamsar Global Ltd is not VAT-registered. The exact price is shown before you pay. We never show made-up "was" prices or countdown offers.
- Auto-renewal: Plus renews automatically at the end of each month or year, at the price you signed up for, until you cancel. You'll see this next to the buy button and again on the payment page. We'll remind you by email before an annual plan renews.
- Starting straight away: before you pay, you ask us to start Plus immediately, during your cancellation period, and confirm you understand your cancellation rights. We keep a record of that request with your subscription.
- Your 14-day cancellation right: under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you can cancel within 14 days of subscribing. We go further than the law requires: if you cancel in those 14 days we refund everything you've paid, with no deduction for the days you've used. Use Settings → Billing → Cancel and get a full refund (one tap), or email [email protected] or write to us at the address above saying you want to cancel. Refunds go back to your card, usually within 5–10 working days and always within 14 days.
- Cancelling later: cancel at any time from Settings → Billing → Manage or cancel, or by emailing us. Plus continues until the end of the period you've paid for and you won't be charged again. We don't refund part-used periods after the first 14 days, unless the law or section 9 says otherwise. We don't make cancelling harder than signing up.
- Failed payments: if a renewal payment fails, Plus keeps working while our payment provider retries for a short time. If it still fails, your account moves back to the free plan; your progress is never deleted.
- Price changes: we'll tell you at least 30 days before a price change affects you, and you can cancel before it does.
- Payments are processed by Stripe Payments Europe Ltd. We don't see or store your full card details.
Plus paid by a parent or guardian
- A learner aged 16 or 17 can't buy Plus. Instead, they can send a parent or guardian a link (or we email it to an address they give us). They can do this at most once a week, and we never remind or prompt them to ask again.
- The parent or guardian opens the link, confirms they are the learner's parent or guardian and 18 or over, agrees to these terms and pays through Stripe. They are the customer: the contract, the 14-day cancellation right, renewals and refunds are theirs, exactly as described above. Plus is attached to the learner's account.
- We record the parent's or guardian's confirmation and consent, with the date, on the learner's account. The only thing we keep about them is the email address the learner entered (if any) and what Stripe needs to take payment.
- To cancel, use the link in the Stripe receipt, the same parent link (with the email used at checkout), or email us. The learner keeps Plus until the end of the paid period.
In-game rewards, XP, streak freezes and coins are part of the game. They have no cash value, can't be bought, sold or exchanged, and aren't real money. We never sell random rewards or paid streak repairs.
6. Using BudgetUp fairly
You agree to follow our acceptable use policy. In short: be kind, don't cheat leagues, don't share institution codes outside your institution, and don't try to break or misuse the service.
7. Our content
The games, characters, artwork, text and software are owned by us or our licensors. Some artwork is used under open licences, credited on our site. You can use BudgetUp for your own personal learning, and teachers and advisers at partner institutions can show it in sessions. Please don't copy, resell or republish our content without permission. If you think something on BudgetUp infringes your rights, email [email protected] and we'll look at it within 48 hours.
8. Your feedback
If you send us ideas or feedback, we can use them to improve BudgetUp without owing you anything. We won't publish anything that identifies you without asking.
9. Availability and changes
We work hard to keep BudgetUp running, accurate and up to date, but we can't promise it will always be available or error-free. We may update games, content and features. If we make a change that significantly affects Plus to your disadvantage, we'll tell you and you can cancel for a pro-rata refund.
10. Suspending or closing accounts
We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms or the acceptable use policy, or where we need to protect someone's safety. Where we reasonably can, we'll tell you why first and give you a chance to respond. If we close a paid account without good reason, we'll refund any unused period.
11. Our responsibility to you
- We're responsible for loss or damage you suffer that's a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill.
- Because BudgetUp is general education and not advice, we're not responsible for financial decisions you make, or for losses that come from relying on general educational content instead of advice about your own circumstances.
- We're not responsible for websites we link to, such as help services.
- Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that can't be limited by law, including your statutory rights as a consumer under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (for example, digital content must be of satisfactory quality and as described).
- Subject to the above, for Plus our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
12. Complaints
If something's gone wrong, please tell us. See our complaints procedure.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. You can bring proceedings in the courts of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your local courts, and you keep the protection of any mandatory consumer law where you live.
14. General
- We may update these terms. We'll show the date at the top and tell you about significant changes before they apply. If you don't agree, you can stop using BudgetUp and cancel Plus.
- If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest still applies.
- Nobody else has rights under these terms, except that your institution can rely on the parts about its access codes.
