Questions you'll answer
£600 deposit. Landlord deducts £50 for an oven you left filthy and £200 for an old, worn carpet. How much SHOULD you get back?
You disagree with a deduction. What's the best route?
Quick facts
- Faded paint on walls after 3 years → Wear & tear (not fair). Normal ageing. Not your bill.
- A burn mark from leaving hair straighteners on the carpet → Fair deduction. That's damage, not wear.
- Oven left caked in grease when it was clean at check-in → Fair deduction. Cleaning back to the check-in standard can be charged.
- Slightly worn carpet in the hallway → Wear & tear (not fair). Feet happen. That's wear and tear.
- Unpaid last month's rent → Fair deduction. Rent arrears can come from the deposit.
