Freshers week: survive the hype
Lesson 1 of 12 in our free Life Events guide: a 5-minute money game with the key points below.
Reading is cool. Playing is cooler.
This lesson is a 5-minute game. Free, no sign-up needed.
The story so far
Mo: Freshers starter pack: wristband for every night, 3 society memberships, a traffic cone, and £400 gone in 6 days.
Nana: Freshers is one week. Your loan has to last the whole term, love.
Chip: Set a freshers budget BEFORE it starts. Free events exist and they're often the best ones.
Questions you'll answer
Mo plans 4 nights out at £25 each, plus £20 for a society. What's Mo's freshers budget?
4 × £25 = £100, plus £20 = £120. Way better than Mo's accidental £400.
Quick facts
- One society membership you'll actually go to → Worth it. Friends + hobby = great value.
- An 'all-week' wristband when you'll realistically go out twice → De-influence. Treat maths says it's 'free' after night 4. You're going twice. Pay per night.
- A 16–25 Railcard if you'll travel home by train → Worth it. £35 a year for a third off most rail fares. Pays for itself fast.
- Signing up for 'free' trials at every stall → De-influence. Free trials roll into paid subscriptions. Set reminders or skip.
- Free campus fair goodies and taster sessions → Worth it. Free pizza is a core freshers memory.
- Fact: “Your first loan instalment has to last until the next one arrives, usually the next term.” — Maintenance loans are normally paid in three termly instalments.
- Fact: “Student bank accounts often come with an interest-free overdraft.” — Common, but it's still debt you'll need to pay back — not free money.
- Myth: “Everyone else is spending loads, so you have to as well.” — Loads of people are quietly skint. Loud budgeting is socially acceptable now — be the one who says it.
