Reselling, gig work and freelancing: when you need to tell HMRC, the trading allowance, Self Assessment and keeping records, explained for UK side hustlers.
Selling your own unwanted stuff ≠ a business. Buying to resell, making to sell, or selling a service regularly = trading.
Trading allowance: £1,000 of gross trading income per tax year, tax-free. Under it? Usually nothing to report.
Revenue − costs = profit. Profit is the number that matters (and the one that gets taxed).
Over £1,000 trading income? Register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the tax year ends, on gov.uk.
Record every sale and cost as it happens. Keep records for at least 5 years after the 31 January filing deadline.
Allowable expenses = costs wholly and exclusively for the business. They reduce taxable profit. Personal spending doesn't.
Online return + payment: 31 January. Late = £100 penalty. Bills over £1,000 can trigger payments on account (31 Jan & 31 Jul).
Self-employed NI: Class 4 at 6% on profits £12,570–£50,270, 2% above. Class 2 counts as paid above £7,105 profit.
Platforms report goods sellers with 30+ sales or about £1,700+ a year (services: any amount). Reported ≠ taxed. Decluttering at a loss is generally not taxable.
Price to cover costs, your time, fees and tax. If your hourly rate is under minimum wage, it's a hobby with homework.
Overpayment requests, off-platform payments, fake courier links and 'easy £500 for using your account' = scams. Stay on-platform.
Under deadline pressure: rebuild records from bank statements, file online by 31 January, pay through gov.uk — and ignore 'HMRC' links.

You buy or make things with the aim of selling them for profit. Yes! Intention to profit, regular sales and buying stock are the big signs HMRC looks at.
