The invisible report card lenders read. How UK credit files and credit scores work, what helps and harms them, and how to check yours for free.
A credit file is a record of your accounts, bills and borrowing. Lenders read it to decide whether to lend to you.
Three main credit reference agencies hold your data. Each score uses a different scale — lenders mostly look at the detail on your file, plus their own rules.
Biggest wins: pay on time, keep balances well below your limits, space out applications.
If you're eligible, register to vote at your current address and keep addresses up to date — it helps lenders verify you and protects against identity fraud.
Utilisation = balance ÷ limit. Using a small slice of your limit and clearing it looks healthier than living at the max.
Hard search = full application, visible to lenders. Soft search = eligibility check or checking your own file, only you see it.
Wrong info? Dispute it with the agency (free). Suspect fraud? Report it. You can also add a short notice of correction to explain something true but misleading.
New to UK credit? Start small: a UK bank account, bills in your name, on-time payments. Build slowly — no need to borrow big.
Your file is about how you handle credit — not how rich you are, where your mates live or whether you checked it.
Joint accounts or joint credit link your file to someone else's. Once you're financially separate, ask each agency for a disassociation.
Landlords and letting agents often run a credit check. A thin file isn't the end — guarantors and other options exist.
Investigate like a detective: check every agency, spot errors, look for fraud and financial links — then fix them for free.
Credit Scores & Files: quick answers
Who mostly reads your credit file?
Lenders, phone and energy companies, and often letting agents. Yes. Anyone offering you credit — or something like it — usually checks before saying yes.
