Quick facts

  • Myth: “Students are exempt from water bills in England.” — The council tax exemption doesn't cover water. Budget for it.
  • Fact: “In Northern Ireland, households don't currently pay separate domestic water charges.” — NI is different — check if you move there.
  • Fact: “In Scotland, water and sewerage charges are usually collected with council tax.” — Same bill, different charge.
  • Water bill comes from a water company, separate from council tax → England & Wales. Separate bill.
  • Water charges collected alongside council tax → Scotland. Combined collection.
  • No separate household water bill → Northern Ireland. Not currently charged to households.
