Questions you'll answer

Dex owes £3,000 across his cards, with £3,600 of total limits. What's his utilisation?

Dex finally asks: 'So how do I make a card work for me?' What's the honest answer?

Quick facts

  • Myth: “Dex: 'Maxed-out cards show lenders I'm trusted with loads of credit.'” — High utilisation can look like you're stretched. Lenders like headroom.
  • Fact: “Clearing the full balance by direct debit gets the protection and rewards without the interest.” — That's the card working for you.
  • Myth: “Dex: 'Cash from a credit card gets the same interest-free days as shopping.'” — Cash withdrawals usually cost a fee and interest from day one.
  • Fact: “Section 75 can cover a £500 item even if only £50 went on the credit card.” — Part-payment on the card can cover the whole item, within the price range.
  • Myth: “There's one official credit score every UK lender uses.” — Each agency has its own scale; lenders read your file and use their own rules.
  • Red flag: “Dear valued customer,” — A generic greeting from a stranger. Real lenders know your name.
  • Red flag: “we can wipe missed payments off your credit file for £99” — Nobody can remove accurate information. Correct entries stay for 6 years. 'Credit repair' fees are a classic scam.
  • Red flag: “and get you an instant £10,000 limit with no checks.” — Real lenders must check affordability. 'No checks' is a lie or a trap.
  • Red flag: “Just pay the fee upfront by gift card.” — Upfront fees, especially by gift card, are a scam signature.
  • Red flag: “Reply in the next 10 mins or the offer goes.” — Pressure to act fast so you don't stop and think.
