Questions you'll answer
Section 75 covers purchases costing over £100, up to how much?
Quick facts
- £400 sofa paid on a credit card, shop goes bust → Section 75 (credit card). Over £100 and up to £30,000 on a credit card.
- £60 jacket paid by debit card, never arrives → Chargeback (debit card). Ask your bank about a chargeback.
- £300 bank transfer to a seller who vanished → Very little protection. Report it fast — if it was a scam, reimbursement may be possible, but there's no Section 75.
- Fact: “Paying even a small deposit on a credit card can give Section 75 protection on the whole item (if it costs over £100, up to £30,000).” — A neat trick — just clear the card balance so you don't pay interest.
- Fact: “Buy now pay later deals are now regulated by the FCA.” — Many third-party BNPL deals became regulated in July 2026, adding checks and complaint rights.
- Myth: “Chargeback is a legal right like Section 75.” — It's a card scheme rule, not law — but still worth asking for.
